Complacency creates opportunities for criminals

THE Malaysian crime index has risen by 4.6% in the first quarter of this year due mainly to a spike in property crimes, “Crime rate up 4.6% for first four months” (Sunday Star, May 8).

Media reports quoted Bukit Aman Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department director Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah saying the criminal’s lock-picking skills and ability to outsmart the victim’s security systems was behind the rise in the number of home burglaries (6,662), motorcycle thefts (12,212) and car thefts (3,656).
