Saudi winds of change

REPORTS on raids carried out by religious authorities to implement the fatwa and state laws on morality and personal sins are quite frequent in the media.

The most recent was on the raid by the Federal Territory religious authority, Jawi, on a transgender fund-raising dinner, which it claimed was actually a beauty contest and unlawful for Muslims to organise and take part in. The most number of raids are khalwat cases, as khalwat is another personal sin which has long been criminalised in several states as punishable under syariah law.
