Cash-for-rat is not the way

THE Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), according to recent media reports, has roped in the public to help in its war against rats. MBPJ is offering a bounty of RM3 per rat, alive or dead, caught by the public. Apparently anyone, foreigners included, can participate in this rat-catching campaign.

Rats belong to the order Rodentia and make up almost half of all the mammal species on earth. Rodents that have established themselves firmly in human habitats are not only considered as pests but are also feared for their ability to spread highly dangerous and infectious zoonotic diseases such as hantavirus fever, leptospirosis, toxoplasmosis and salmonellosis.
