YIP Yoke Teng’s article, “Old folk too easily forgotten” (The Star, May 27), has drawn focus once again to the plight of the elderly in our country. Like the proverbial elephant in the room, everyone, including the Government, is aware of this problem, but we choose to put it on the back burner, hoping somehow that it will go away if we just ignore it, or be resolved by society’s good Samaritans.
Each year when the Budget is announced, we scan the papers looking for some tiny morsels of good news for senior citizens and the elderly, only to be disappointed yet again.
