PENANG has many beautiful sights but they are marred by litter. Everywhere one goes, one encounters unsightly rubbish strewn all over the place. The MBPP has spent vast amounts of money to clean up public places but to no avail. A case in point is the Queensbay Esplanade which is well fenced up for both pedestrians and cyclists. The walk and cycling paths are well paved and it’s a beautiful sight to behold, flanked by the Penang bridge on one side and the Second bridge on the other.
I recently drove there for my morning walk and found the paths littered with rubbish, obviously left by careless picnickers who either did not bother to throw the remnants of their food into nearby rubbish bins or were too lazy or just couldn’t care less as they feel it’s the government’s job to clean up. I also noticed that rubbish bins were full to the brim and the stench of garbage was nearly unbearable.
