MALAYSIA’s defeat to Japan in the Thomas Cup Final has glaringly underscored the need for a dependable back-up squad and the need to make badminton and other sports multiracial as espoused by the 1Malaysia philosophy.
The last time Malaysia won the Thomas Cup in 1992 it was very much a multiracial team comprising the Sidek brothers, Cheah Soon Kit, Soo Beng Kiang and Foo Kok Keong and the head coach was the versatile Punch Gunalan.
