Own damage claim is a better option

I CAN empathise with the writer of “A real hassle making a simple claim” (The Star, Sept 9) as I was involved in a similar road accident several months ago.

Making an own damage (OD) claim would mean losing the no-claim-discount (NCD) and a third-party claim would be tedious and may not be worth the effort as compensation is often disappointing.

As such, I opted for an own damage – knock for knock (OD-KFK) claim with my own insurance company without losing the NCD as it was clearly the fault of the driver who hit me from behind.

I had to pay a RM400 excess however and the amount was claimed from the insurer of the other party.

I also made a claim of RM100 for documentation fee and RM420 for 14 days loss of use totalling RM520, but was offered only RM240.

I would not recommend others to opt for third-party claim for vehicle damage as it would be a real hassle as aptly described by the writer.

It is always better to send your vehicle to a workshop in the insurance company’s panel and they would handle it under OD-KFK claim, and assist in making a third-party claim for loss of use.

The running about to the police station and insurance companies is very tiring and time consuming to motorists but it is all in a day’s work for those operating workshops that make use of connections and shortcuts.
