Deaths from snake bites

I STAND corrected in the letter “The snake, the most misunderstood of animals”(The Star, Feb 12) that dogs and horses cause more deaths than the snake.

This is true for a Western developed region but not worldwide. Worldwide, an estimated one million or more snake bites result in an estimated 30,000-40,000 deaths annually, with the vast majority in India, Sri Lanka and Africa.
