I REFER to “In a fix over one man’s absence” (The Star, June 21) by Mergawati Zulfakar. I have been to Khartoum, Sudan, for three consecutive years in 2009, 2010 and 2011 – having been invited as a guest lecturer by one of the private universities there, for two weeks on each visit.
At first, I thought Sudan was dangerous and wild, a war-torn country, and with Syariah rules applied everywhere. Yet I saw men and women shake hands freely. Some women also don’t wear the hijab.
