‘Dead mileage’ reason for KLIA touts

WE are probably the only country in the world where taxis upon reaching the airport cannot ferry passengers back to the city. In economic language, it is termed ‘dead mileage”.

This practice of not allowing airport-bound taxis to pick up passengers and to return empty is costing the nation millions of ringgit every year. Besides fuel and wear and tear costs to cover the empty return leg, the taxi driver does not earn a single sen and his time spent driving back is wasted. Some term this as “non-revenue” trips.
