Mutual understanding key to sustaining a marriage

I REFER to the letter “It takes hard work to make a marriage work” (The Star, Feb 11). As perfectly pointed out by the writer, a marriage is truly not made in heaven and we need to work hard on it to make it successful.

What is a marriage? It is a social institution whereby a contract is made between a man and a woman. It is a commitment of the two parties to one another, and their mutual attachment of mind and heart. A strong foundation of love should be established between the couple, and this foundation must never be allowed to be shaken by incidents that happen between them.
