Allow only good swimmers to participate in water sports

I REFER to your recent report “Student safety is paramount,” (The Star, Jan 20). Did Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin really say that the employment of security measures was “up to the teacher’s own discretion” as paraphrased in the article?

I find it grossly inadequate as safety is the combined responsibility of individual students and teachers, the school and the Education Ministry. The ministry may not be able to monitor the thousands of schools, but that is no excuse for leaving it to the teachers’ discretion.
