FOR centuries, the Drum and Bell Towers in Beijing have helped inhabitants of the city tell the time; and now they are a popular must-visit tourist destination in the Chinese capital.

Last Saturday, a day before Duan Wu Jie (Dragon Boat Festival), trishaws and their drivers as usual lined the hutong (small alleys) leading to the towers.
