YOUR report, “Better childcare” (The Star, April 29) quoted Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil as saying her ministry had been reviewing the Childcare Centre Act over the past year and was working towards encouraging more childcare centre and nursery operators to apply for licences and employ trained staff.  

The Social Welfare Department shows that, nationwide, only 1,831 childcare centres were licensed as of March.
