IT was perhaps after six weeks of living in Bangkok that I first heard a local cab driver curse. 

That is, I am quite sure he was cursing. That string of Thai-language syllables could not have been in admiration of the young motorcyclist who had just swerved across his path in that weaving pattern universal to all gridlocked Asian cities.
