THE announcement of the increase in public transport fares has, as usual, met with an instant round of mixed reactions. Both commuters and operators hold views that range from the satisfied to the disappointed, for different reasons. 

For those who accept the new rates for buses and taxis, the increases are not unreasonable, particularly when rates have stayed constant for some time. But some of the disappointed find the new charges a burden on the lower income group.
