Earthquake-prone Japan has the world’s best equipment and expertise in detecting earthquakes and minimising their impact. As last Sunday’s quake in the Indian Ocean travelled around the world, Japanese authorities pledged to provide its seismological services to other countries

THE losses in last Sunday’s 9.0-point series of offshore tremors and tsunami in southern Asia are heavy and continue to mount. But the world has seen other natural disasters with more fatalities.
