ACCORDING to official figures, there are some 36,000 foreign students in Malaysia’s higher education institutions. Most of them are pursuing Masters or PhD degrees at our public universities. 

That number is now set to grow with the policy of enrolling more foreign students. In doing so, however, our educationists must be clear about the specific academic directions that can help in Malaysia’s continued progress, rather than simply cater to the international student market’s preference for certain courses.
