ON April 8, the Rural and Regional Development Ministry said it would take three years to end hardcore poverty and modernise villages. 

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who said that tackling poverty was a high priority, has also assigned the Housing and Local Government Ministry the task of eradicating hardcore poverty and to co-ordinate programmes of all local authorities to eradicate urban poverty.
