RECENTLY, there have been calls to classify non-rape sexual offences as rape in an attempt to curb the rising statistics of sexual offences. 

The outcry is understandable and certainly legitimate. “Rape”, however, is a technical word with a universal definition, that is, penile penetration of the vaginal introitus without consent or if the girl is under 16 years of age (even with “consent”).
