THE new year has ushered in a new wave of insecurity to Thailand’s predominantly Malay-Muslim southern provinces. The statistics for the first 10 days of 2004 are appalling – six security officers dead, 300 military weapons stolen, 21 schools torched and a police station sprayed with bullets.
Is the cauldron of mistrust that has been simmering in Southern Thailand starting to boil? Or are embers being stoked anew by a mysterious militia cashing in on the increasing resentment against the powers in Bangkok?
