A grand standoff is building up between Umno and PAS in Kedah for this general election, writes JOCELINE TAN who travelled up north recently. The rice bowl state is the ambitious focus of PAS whereas Umno is working hard to strengthen its control.  

THE padi fields around Alor Star glistened like polished jade in the rain. The wet spell had not been as unkind up north as it has been in the south of Kedah and the green fields, framed by cloud-tipped mountains, had an unworldly elegance about them.
