Prof H.M. Amin Abdullah is a leading Islamic scholar in Indonesia and a renowned Muslim intellectual in south-east Asia. Dr Amin, or “Pak Amin,” is currently rector of the State Institute of Islamic Studies (IAIN) in Jogjakarta. 

Dr Amin is a professor of philosophy and teaches postgraduate classes in Islamic philosophy, Tasawuf, religious philosophy, western and modern philosophy and the Islamic studies approach. He is the author of several published works including The Idea of Universality of Ethical Norms in Ghazali and Kant, Falsafah Kalam di Era Postmodernism, Studi Agama: Normativitas atau Historisitas, and Dinamika Islam Kultural. 

Prof Amin was in Kuala Lumpur recently as a guest speaker at a public forum organised by Sisters in Islam, following which he spoke to BUNN NAGARA on his ideas and experience. 

The following are excerpts in the first of a two-part interview.
