PAS has an identity problem – the Islamist party wants to project itself as a moderate and fair party to non-Muslims but at the same time it wants to be seen as a puritan bent on creating an Islamic state.
To its hardcore supporters in the rural areas, PAS leaders have promised they will build an Islamic state, much like those in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan or Iran.
