ZAINI Abdullah became the public face of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) in 2000 when he began to lead the Aceh side in the ceasefire negotiation with Indonesian diplomats in Geneva.
Zaini joined the rebellion at its inception in the late 1970s. He moved to Stockholm, Sweden, along with Hasan Tiro, the initiator of the movement in the 1980s, and led a normal life as a medical practitioner. He is now the foreign minister in exile.
