Critical giant leap to peace

MANILA: Two years ago President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo got as her Independence Day gift the head of American hostage Guillermo Sobero, courtesy of the Abu Sayyaf. On the same occasion this Thursday, she got the gift of a 10-day ceasefire, courtesy of the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

Of course, the MILF was careful to stress that the gift was really for the people of Mindanao “who have suffered enough,” but it must have been welcome news for Arroyo who was in the middle of her six-day swing through the southern Philippines.
