THE grandeur of the occasion was not lost on many. St Petersburg put on a grand show to mark its 300th anniversary yesterday, attended by some 45 world leaders, including the heads of the Group of Eight developed nations, who are meeting today in Evian, France.
No expense was spared to reclaim its bygone majesty as “the window on Europe” and secure its title as the cultural capital of Russia, what with the opening of the recreated Amber Room in Catherine the Great’s summer palace.
