IN his Telugu New Year message, MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu urged the various dialect groups in the Indian community to continue their undivided support for Barisan Nasional, reports Malaysia Nanban and Tamil Nesan.

He said peace and stability in the country could be derived only through tolerance and the spirit of give and take among the races.

Samy Vellu cautioned the groups against falling prey and being misled by certain extremist groups out to provoke racial tension.

Malaysia Nanban reported the appointment of two representatives of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) as municipal councillors in Kedah.

It said it was the first time that the party was given posts in the council.

Kedah PPP secretary N. Ayasamy was appointed to the Kulim Municipal Council and vice-chairman K. Vadivelu to the Sungai Petani Municipal Council.

Chairman V. Nadarajah described the appointments as a “recognition by the state government of the party’s struggle.”
