A COLLEAGUE’S relative from Singapore called up a few days ago to say that she would be visiting Kuala Lumpur this weekend for the Qing Ming festival. She planned to stay at my colleague’s house with her family members before going to the Nirvana Memorial in Nilai to pay respects to her late mother the following day.

In the past, the Singaporean relative would have been welcomed, but this time many Malaysian Chinese families, like my colleague, are having second thoughts about having Singaporean relatives at their homes because of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) scare.
