Consumers who opt to buy pirated music reap the short-term exuberance of paying less. But in depriving artistes and recording companies of their dues, these music lovers have cheated themselves of a vibrant local music scene, reports IVY SOON.

ENTERTAINMENT journalist Zainal Alam Kadir has always railed at the lack of exciting new talent in the local music scene. He suspects that recording companies are not trying hard enough to unearth new acts, or are simply afraid to venture beyond tested manufactured sound. Hence, when he heard the raw talent in the band Alam Maya at an inter-varsity band competition, he set out to shake the local music scene from its doldrums.
