BANGKOK: For a man who prides himself on his knowledge of diplomacy, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has proven once again that he is still wet behind the ears when it comes to protocol.

Thaksin committed a diplomatic faux pas when he congratulated Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao for being appointed to the presidency before the formal announcement was made. The Thai premier also broke all the rules by placing more importance on China's presidency than on the top post of the all-powerful Chinese Communist Party.
