TAMIL NESAN and Malaysia Nanban gave extensive coverage to the Thaipusam festival celebrated on Sunday at various Hindu temples in the country.

Both dailies commended the Sri Maha Mariamman temple management for its effort to upgrade facilities at the Batu Caves Murugan temple.

The daily also quoted National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) secretary-general Datuk N. Siva Subramaniam as urging the Government to quickly fill the vacancies for headmasters in more than 400 primary and secondary schools in the country.

This includes more than 30 Tamil schools in rural and urban areas.

He also said that the implementation of the teaching of Maths and Science in English would not be enforced effectively if the headmasters were not appointed soon.

“A school without a headmaster is similar to a ship without a captain which will lose its direction,'' the daily quoted him as saying.

Tamil Nesan highlighted the funeral of 96-year-old poet Harivansrai Bachchan, the father of popular Hindi movie star Amitabh Bachchan, in Mumbai, India.

The daily carried a photo of Amitabh setting fire to the remains of his father, in accordance with Hindu customs.
