PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad's call for a special meeting with all state religious departments to discuss the need for a uniform set of Syariah laws was highlighted in Utusan Malaysia and Berita Harian.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Abdul Hamid Zainal Abidin was quoted as saying that the meeting was an opportunity to discuss some of the technical problems faced by the various states on religious affairs.
The urgency in discussing the matter, said both papers, was due to the recent controversy over polygamy and the case of Siti Fauziah Abdul Rahman, who was granted custody of her child by the Syariah court in Terengganu although the Syariah court in Alor Star had awarded it to the husband.
·News regarding D. Heryati Abdul Rahim, the second wife of former Deputy Prime Minister Tun Ghafar Baba, continued to hog the headlines in Berita Harian.
It reported that she planned to reopen her khalwat case with the three Bosnian workers in the Syariah court to re-establish her innocence.
·Utusan Malaysia also carried a report on the assurance by DAP secretary-general Kerk Kim Hock that the party would not lose its ideology in its link-up with PAS in the next general election.
PAS acting president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang's invitation to DAP to rejoin the opposition group was given prominence in the two Malay dailies over the last few days.
