Telling the story – the true story


At the base of the National Monument is an inscription: ‘To Our Glorious Dead and the Emergency’. It honours the people – of many races and many nationalities – who died fighting for this nation. 

HISTORY, Winston Churchill is reputed to have said, is written by the victors. In other words, what we learn as history may not be the truth. It’s the story that we have been told to hear.
