IT was at the picturesque Esplanade Padang in Penang back in the late 1980s. Against the backdrop of the serene waters of the channel, a football tournament was being held.

Our team was in the semi-final. One win and we would be in the final. But first, we had to beat the hosts, the boys who lived in the Weld Quay and Little India areas around the field.
