Long fall from grace for Mugabe

IT finally happened. Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe is no longer leader of his nation. After 37 years at the helm, he was forced out by his own clique who feared the potential rule of his power-crazed wife Grace.

It’s hard to believe now but when I started following politics in the 1980s, Mugabe was one of the good guys. A leader of the struggle against colonial-era Rhodesia, he fought against the white supremacist Ian Smith regime and as leader of Zanu-PF, he became the leader of a free black Zimbabwe in 1980.
