In a world increasingly bereft of ideological orthodoxy, once dominant social-democratic parties are struggling.
MY first real introduction to understanding politics was when my history teacher Alan Walters drew a political spectrum on the blackboard. It was all very clear to 14-year-old me. To the left of centre were the liberals, then the socialists and finally the communists. To the right were a bunch of repellent ideologies that all looked the same to me. I veered sharply left and haven’t even looked back once, even as my beliefs have shifted from one shade of red to the other.
