WHEN writing about global politics it’s difficult to avoid the T-word (and without the T, he’s just rump). America’s newest president has already made waves when it comes to relations with the USSR, China and the broader Islamic world, but another key region is that of South and Central America.

If early indications are to go by, a return to the old subservient relationship is what he wishes for. The Mexican wall aside, this would mean taking a hard line against Cuba and Venezuela, keeping the US’ right-wing exile community happy, while the rest of Latin America is steered in a more compliant direction, governed by administrations with US-friendly policies.
