ONE of the most potent arguments for gender equality is the simplest to understand. The world can never be at its best – or even get close to it – when half the population consistently gets better rights, resources, opportunities and protection than the other half.

Some men may bask in the false sense of superiority, but in fact, everybody loses each time a girl is told to abandon her dream because she is not a boy. Or when a woman is frustrated by barrier after barrier while her male peers have a clear path.
