IT IS very difficult to stay focused on the big picture. That often requires us to set aside self-interest, at least in the short term. How many people are willing to do that based on the promise that we will all benefit somewhere down the road?
Besides, the big picture is usually complicated and iffy. There are many moving parts and it is difficult to see how we fit in it. It is way easier to fix our gaze on our own needs.
