About leprosy

Although leprosy is not easily transmissible, itis hard to shake off the stigma associated withthe condition.

THIS article was prompted by inquiries following media reports about the Sungai Buloh leprosy centre. It brings back memories of my posting as a medical student to the then world-renowned research centre. The statement by the then director of the centre, Dr Bhojwani, that staff who worked there had never contracted leprosy, still rings in my ears. Most of the residents of the leprosy centre have been cured of their condition for a long time but had stayed on because of rejection by family and society.
