Keep fighting for the gender quota

OBSERVING Ramadan during the British summer means Muslims in this part of the world fast for an average of 18 to 19 hours daily. I have seen how Muslim communities bond during Ramadan with daily buka puasa gatherings and terawih prayers at local mosques. These are communities that I have not tapped into in the nine months I have lived here.

I find it refreshing that there is no social stigma when Muslims eat in public during Ramadan, being unable to fast due to illness, fatigue or menstruation. The long days spent fasting have also allowed me to be more introspective and somehow sharper in my observances.
