NEW YORK, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended higher on Monday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 594.79 points, or 1.23 percent, to 48,977.18. The S&P 500 added 43.58 points, or 0.64 percent, to 6,902.05. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased 160.19 points, or 0.69 percent, to 23,395.82.
Seven of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with energy and financials leading the gainers by rising 2.67 percent and 2.15 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, utilities and consumer staples led the laggards by going down 1.16 percent and 0.33 percent, respectively.
