U.S. stocks close lower

NEW YORK, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended lower on Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 94.87 points, or 0.2 percent, to 48,367.06. The S&P 500 sank 9.5 points, or 0.14 percent, to 6,896.24. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 55.27 points, or 0.24 percent, to 23,419.08.

Six of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in red, with consumer discretionary and financials leading the laggards by losing 0.32 percent and 0.28 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, energy and communication services led the gainers by adding 0.75 percent and 0.33 percent, respectively.
