KABUL, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan has harvested an estimated 4.54 million metric tons of wheat across the country in the current year of 2025, the state-run Bakhtar News Agency reported on Wednesday, citing a statement of the National Statistics and Information Authority (NSIA).

The figure was determined through remote sensing technology and satellite imagery analysis, which provided a detailed assessment of the country's overall agricultural productivity, the report said.

Of the total production, approximately 4.13 million tons came from irrigated farmland, while around 404,000 tons were rain-fed wheat, the official media outlet added.

Agriculture remains a cornerstone of Afghanistan's economy, employing a large portion of the population and serving as a vital source of food and income. Wheat, in particular, is the country's main staple crop, playing a crucial role in ensuring food security in the post-war Central Asian nation.

According to reports, Afghanistan needs 1.5 million metric tons of wheat annually to fill the shortfall of the essential grain in the war-torn country.
