LOS ANGELES, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Monday that people in the U.S. state of California purchased 124,755 zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) in the third quarter of 2025, marking the highest quarterly sales share ever recorded in the state.
The ZEV sales accounted for 29.1 percent of all new car sales during the quarter, according to a release from the governor's office.
The milestone follows Newsom's announcement last week that California has added more than 30,000 megawatts of new clean energy and storage capacity since 2019, while virtually eliminating coal from its power supply.
"This is unprecedented -- we're nearing a third of all new vehicles sold in the fourth largest economy on the planet being clean cars," Newsom said in a statement.
To date, Californians have purchased a cumulative 2.47 million new ZEVs, according to the release.
Last month, the governor's office also reported continued growth in clean truck sales across the state in 2024, with manufacturers indicating that nearly one in four trucks, buses and vans sold were zero-emission.
