FRANKFURT, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Lufthansa Group announced on Monday that it plans to cut around 4,000 jobs worldwide by 2030, most of them in Germany.
According to a press release of the group, the cuts will primarily affect administrative positions. The group said the reduction would be achieved through greater digitalization, automation, and streamlined processes.
The reduction will be done "in consultation with social partners," it said, adding that processes and structures within the group's internal cooperation will change significantly in the coming years.
The Lufthansa Group employs approximately 103,000 people worldwide.
Ver.di, the German trade union representing service-sector employees, strongly criticized the planned staff reduction and called for job protections. "We will not accept mass layoffs at Lufthansa at the expense of employees," said Marvin Reschinsky, group representative and lead negotiator for ver.di.
He urged the federal government to "take immediate action to safeguard jobs and ensure the future of Germany's aviation sector."
