BUCHAREST, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Romania has emerged as the European Union's leading grain exporter for the 2024-2025 commercial year (between July 2024-June 2025), recording the largest wheat, barley, and corn exports in the bloc, according to European Commission data released on Friday.

Romania exported 5.4 million tons of common wheat during this period, valued at 1.2 billion euros (1.41 billion U.S. dollars), at an average price of 0.23 euros per kilogram.

Although this represents a decline from last year's 6.4 million tons with a value of 1.46 billion euros, it was still enough to lead the bloc.

Germany and Lithuania ranked second and third, respectively, in wheat exports. France, which topped wheat exports in 2023-2024 with 9.1 million tons, dropped to sixth place due to poor weather during the spring sowing season.

Romania also led the EU in barley exports, shipping 2 million tons worth 390 million euros, marking an increase over last year. In corn, the country again came out on top with 1.2 million tons exported, valued at 304 million euros, at 0.25 euros per kilogram.

In total, EU wheat exports fell sharply to 20.6 million tons this year, from 31.49 million tons in 2023-2024, with total export value dropping from 7.5 billion euros to 4.9 billion euros. The average price of wheat remained unchanged at 0.24 euros per kilogram. (1 euro = 1.18 U.S. dollar)
