DAR ES SALAAM, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa on Wednesday directed the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) to conduct regular inspections of all bridges and culverts along major roads to avoid potential damage caused by ongoing rains.

Majaliwa made the order when he inspected renovations of bridges at Matandu and Somanga-Mtama in Kilwa District of the Lindi Region along the Dar es Salaam-Lindi highway, which were swept away by flooding caused by the rains.

He also instructed TANROADS to work day and night to ensure that all areas affected by flooding in the Lindi Region are repaired and restored to normal as quickly as possible.

Majaliwa assured residents of the Lindi and Mtwara regions that the government has already disbursed funds to reconstruct and repair road sections damaged by ongoing rains.

He added that the government has a long-term plan to completely reconstruct the Dar es Salaam-Lindi-Mtwara highway to higher standards, with the current bridge construction being the initial phase of this strategic project.
