Lithuanian prosecutors suspect human error in DHL plane crash

VILNIUS, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Lithuanian prosecutors suspect that human error caused the crash of a Spanish DHL cargo plane in Vilnius and have requested that Spanish authorities question the pilot involved, the Prosecutor General's Office told Baltic News Service (BNS) on Wednesday.

The pilot, who is currently undergoing treatment in Spain, has been identified as a suspect. Lithuanian officials have asked Spanish authorities to conduct the necessary investigations, issue a notice of suspicion, and question him regarding the circumstances of the crash.

Investigators say data collected from interviews, the crash site inspection, flight logs, cockpit voice recordings, and other evidence indicate the accident may have been caused by the deactivation of the hydraulic system controlling the wing flaps. Other possible causes have been ruled out, the prosecution service said.

The Boeing 737-476 (SF), operated by Spanish airline Swift Air, crashed into a residential building near Vilnius Airport on Nov. 25, killing one Spanish pilot and injuring three others.

In December, Lithuania's Justice Ministry said a preliminary analysis of the aircraft's black boxes showed no signs of unlawful interference.
